Carnevale di Venezia

The Carnival of Venice has ancient origins stemming from the Venetian victory over Ulrich, patriarch of Aquileia. It was a great popular festival which culminated in a sumptuous celebration on Fat Thursday, when in the presence of the Doge, the butchers guild slaughtered a bull and 12 pigs representing the Primate of Aquileia and his canons.
The Carnival, which in recent years has returned to Venice, may have forgotten its origins but it has not lost any of its importance as a great folk festival with its light-heartedness and transgression.
Those photographs were taken by Agnieszka Lavery at The Venice Carnival in March 2011. All the images are of real people dressed up for the carnival. Some of the images have been rendered on canvas in order to achieve the texture of an oil painting.
The photographs can be bought as they are in this exhibition or ordered from the artist in any size up to A2 in photographic print or canvas in limited edition of 25.
Agnieszka Lavery started her artistic career drawing and painting, she finished Art College in Warsaw, Poland and moved to London a few years later, where she studied for a degree in Graphic & Fine Art, it was that she developed a fascination for photography. In 2001 she established a class teaching photographic and darkroom techniques in Kingsley Hall, Bromley by Bow, in collaboration in her local Bromley by Bow Centre and Middlessex University. This resulted in the forming of the “e3” photographic group, which explored East London life in B&W photography.
In 2005 she packed the analogue enlargers and her film cameras into storage and moved into digital photography. Agnieszka has learnt to combine the skills she has developed as a film photographer and her background as an artist to continue her experimentations in composition, colour, and the relationship between light and shadow, in her search for
the perfect portraiture.
